Summary

Spider-Man makes history! In 1962’s AMAZING FANTASY #15, teenage Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and became the amazing Spider-Man! Nearly sixty years have passed in the real world since that event — so what would have happened if the same amount of time passed for Peter? In celebration of an icon, Chip Zdarsky and legendary artist Mark Bagley spin a unique Spidey tale — telling the entire life story of Spider-Man from beginning to end, set against the key events of the decades through which he lived! From the Vietnam War to Secret Wars and Civil War, all the way through to what just might be a 72-year-old Spider-Man’s final mission, prepare to watch Peter Parker age by the issue — now in hardcover, including a brand-new Annual tale!

3。5This was bittersweet I guess, but way more bitter than sweet I feel。 I can say that everything about it is really well made but I don't like feeling depressed like this。 Even Old Man Logan wasn't this depressing。 3。5This was bittersweet I guess, but way more bitter than sweet I feel。 I can say that everything about it is really well made but I don't like feeling depressed like this。 Even Old Man Logan wasn't this depressing。 。。。more

One of the most depressing Spidey tales I've ever read and I wasn't prepared for the feels。 I suppose the fact that a work of art can put me into a dark mood is in itself a testament to its greatness, however I still cannot give a higher rating since it's not the kind of story I was looking for or expect from a hero tale。 I also despise Miles Morales as an embodiment of unoriginality and inability to create new characters that stand on their own without copying the already established and popula One of the most depressing Spidey tales I've ever read and I wasn't prepared for the feels。 I suppose the fact that a work of art can put me into a dark mood is in itself a testament to its greatness, however I still cannot give a higher rating since it's not the kind of story I was looking for or expect from a hero tale。 I also despise Miles Morales as an embodiment of unoriginality and inability to create new characters that stand on their own without copying the already established and popular ones。 。。。more

Fresh Take on Classic StoriesThis story has a clever concept: Spider-Man ages in real time from his first appearance at age 15 in 1962 until 2019。 Life Story refreshes the Spider-Man mythos, but still maintains the integrity of the character。

The BEST Spider-Man story I ever read。 Cool concept What If the characters aged in real time, with different twists of stories that came out in the different decades

This is just about as good as a superhero comic can get。 A Spider-man comic that not only got me choked up once, but multiple times is quite a storytelling feat。 Especially considering how cold and dead my heart is。 The art is by Bagley, who was born to draw Spider-man, and because he drew Spidey when I read as a kid, he’s also the only REAL Spidey artist to me。 So of course the art is perfect。The story is cleverly done, seeing Peter from his early career to an old man, with the major events hap This is just about as good as a superhero comic can get。 A Spider-man comic that not only got me choked up once, but multiple times is quite a storytelling feat。 Especially considering how cold and dead my heart is。 The art is by Bagley, who was born to draw Spider-man, and because he drew Spidey when I read as a kid, he’s also the only REAL Spidey artist to me。 So of course the art is perfect。The story is cleverly done, seeing Peter from his early career to an old man, with the major events happening as if he were aging in “real time”。 It’s very affecting, and I didn’t even “get” a lot of the references since I’ve been criminally out of touch with Spider-man comics since the 90’s。 This is great stuff。 I’ll be picking this up in hardcover, where the story will have a forever home on my shelves。 It doesn’t get much better than this folks。 。。。more

Very nice the way the author changes some story arcs the fit the whole "aging Spider-man through the years" narrative, but without some prior knowledge from said arcs, can leave new readers a little confusedOverall very fun! As others have said, this book is largely depressing。 But for some reason, I still liked it。

A new essential spidey story。 Spider-Man life story takes us from the 60s to the 2010s documenting the life of Peter Parker in real time, it covers all the essential storylines and even some of the bad ones。 Secret Wars, Civil War, Clone Saga, etc。 I’d say its a good refresher on Peters story up until the modern age of his comics at a real time pace where peter ages appropriately as time passes。 The art evolves as the time passes reflecting the styles of the time it keeps the book moving and fee A new essential spidey story。 Spider-Man life story takes us from the 60s to the 2010s documenting the life of Peter Parker in real time, it covers all the essential storylines and even some of the bad ones。 Secret Wars, Civil War, Clone Saga, etc。 I’d say its a good refresher on Peters story up until the modern age of his comics at a real time pace where peter ages appropriately as time passes。 The art evolves as the time passes reflecting the styles of the time it keeps the book moving and feels very fresh。 I think my only problem with the book is that it can be a little too depressing sometimes and that could throw a lot of people off guard, its a somber yet impactful book but I think some of Peters turmoil piles up when you put everything he’s ever been through at a crazy pace。 Id strongly recommend this for long time spider-man fans and those who are just starting to get really into his story。 。。。more

As great as everyone says it is。 Can't say Bagley's art really does it for me here but Zdarsky knows how to write a good spidey story。 Clone saga still kinda sucks no matter how you write it though。 As great as everyone says it is。 Can't say Bagley's art really does it for me here but Zdarsky knows how to write a good spidey story。 Clone saga still kinda sucks no matter how you write it though。 。。。more

With some regularity in comics, an author will make a single volume book that tries to unite the entire history of a comic character's franchise。 For example, James Stokoe's Godzilla Half Century War (one of the greats) condenses all the movie monster's films into one clever story。 Another example is Neil Gaiman's 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader' in which the legacy of Batman is reflected on during his wake。 And now Chip Zdarsky throws his hat into the ring with the maddening, occasiona With some regularity in comics, an author will make a single volume book that tries to unite the entire history of a comic character's franchise。 For example, James Stokoe's Godzilla Half Century War (one of the greats) condenses all the movie monster's films into one clever story。 Another example is Neil Gaiman's 'Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader' in which the legacy of Batman is reflected on during his wake。 And now Chip Zdarsky throws his hat into the ring with the maddening, occasionally rousing, Spider-Man: Life Story。The book follows Spider-man in real time from the 1960s as he grows older while encountering different iconic plotlines from his history。 Effectively, the books is a nostalgic remix, an attempt to unite decades of disparate plots into one coherent character-focused story。 Unfortunately, coherence is not its strong suit。 While the story is of course much simpler than the 60 years of published comics, it still feels the need to ping-pong from ridiculous plot point to ridiculous plot point too fast for you to notice how dumb the individual moments are。 If the goal is to clean up Parker's story into something presentable, then perhaps it would have been wise to remove some of the melodrama related to cloning, aliens, psychic battles, and amnesia (or at least make them mildly less silly)。 Die hard fans might be happy to see nods to the Clone Saga, Superior Spider-Man, and Kraven's Last Hunt, those in search of a compelling story will not be。 While at first the soap-opera writ-large nature of the story feels like it might be a loving tribute to the silver age of comics, it quickly becomes exhausting。 By the midpoint of the book, one wonders what precisely the point is supposed to be。 It's not portraying Spider-Man himself in a new or interesting light, it's simply a lot of plot presented all at once。 Sometimes the book waxes political (some sections dealing with the morality of Vietnam are interesting in their own right but out of place in a book with an energy vampire and two separate clone-all-along reveals), but this just adds to the mishmash of ideas vomited onto the page。 Mark Bagley is the iconic Spider-Man artist of his generation and while he's not my favorite, he does admirable work here, selling a number of emotional moments with aplomb。 But the story is too messy for any amount of great art to save it。 Characters and plot points come and go without rhyme or reason and Peter's entire life seems to revolve around guilt and misery (which again, isn't out of keeping with his history, but makes for a dismal read)。 To anyone who's read my review this far, I apologize now for its scattershot nature。 Spider-Man Life Story is a dense work and hard to sum up。 But it shouldn't be。 The advantage to a book that condenses the story and legacy of a character into a bite-size work should be that it teases a throughline from the decades of gimmicks, cliffhangers, and marketing ploys。 Life Story not only fails to do this but ultimately muddles itself so thoroughly that no amount of its nostalgia and fan service could make me shake the feeling that I'd rather just be reading a spider-man story。As a final note, I'd like to recommend a few books that do in fact manage to pull off a 'life story' style tribute/remix as I think when done correctly, they make for really interesting reads。Godzilla: Half Century War: Five issues, one for each decade。 Follow Godzilla from unknown force of nature to humanity's last hope through the eyes of one soldier who's witnessed the whole thing。 All-Star Superman: A tribute to the sillier, more optimistic side of Superman。 Superman: Secret Identity: Technically not a Superman story at all, this one follows the life of a boy in the real world who is granted the powers of Superman and chooses to live up to his legacy。 。。。more

A very good read, had a lot of fun with it。 Not perfect but an interesting concept executed well。 I've not always been a big Spider-Man guy but I imagine fans of the character would absolutely adore this book so I recommend it to them highly。 For people like me who maybe aren't as familiar I encourage you to give it a try, it's surprisingly accessible and probably the best Spiderman book I've read。 A very good read, had a lot of fun with it。 Not perfect but an interesting concept executed well。 I've not always been a big Spider-Man guy but I imagine fans of the character would absolutely adore this book so I recommend it to them highly。 For people like me who maybe aren't as familiar I encourage you to give it a try, it's surprisingly accessible and probably the best Spiderman book I've read。 。。。more

It’s a great story, real and full of emotion。 It’s interesting to be able to see all of Peter’s life, with major events from the comics and actual history, which I believe were nicely written。 However, the last story was lacking, confusing and boring。I loved Zdarsky’s covers, so simple yet carefully crafted。 The overall artwork of the book was good as well, always consistent, reflecting each of the decades the story takes place in。Note: This is my first Peter Parker comic and it was easy for me It’s a great story, real and full of emotion。 It’s interesting to be able to see all of Peter’s life, with major events from the comics and actual history, which I believe were nicely written。 However, the last story was lacking, confusing and boring。I loved Zdarsky’s covers, so simple yet carefully crafted。 The overall artwork of the book was good as well, always consistent, reflecting each of the decades the story takes place in。Note: This is my first Peter Parker comic and it was easy for me to follow what was going on。 However, I’ve watched every live action Spiderman movie (I think) and some of the animated series。 。。。more
